Dealing
With Jorge Posada out for the year, Brian Cashman added a catcher today by trading Kyle Farnsworth to Detroit for Ivan Rodgriguez. With Jose Veras and Edwar Ramirez pitching well, and Brian Bruney close to coming back from rehab, Farnsworth became expendable. Although Jose Molina has held his own defensively, he has not done much with his bat, creating a hole in the bottom of the Yankee lineup (as evidence look no further than the intentional walk of Melky today).
This move helps the Yankees a lot. They get one of the best all time catch and throw receivers in the game, who also happens to hold a career .302 batting average.
Hank and Hal Steinbrenner have made the decision to go for it this year. Jarrod Washburn may be next!
Yanks Make a Move
With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, the Yankees pulled the trigger on a trade for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte. In return, they sent Jose Tabata, Ross Ohlendorf, Phil Coke and George Kontos to the Bucs.
With Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada likely out of the year, Nady should give them some right-handed pop in their lineup. As for Marte (a former Yankee prospect), he is a left handed power pitcher, and should help to balance out the bullpen.
*****UPDATE*****
The deal with Pittsburgh was reconfigured. Tabata and Ohlendorf are still part of it, however the the Pirates were given the option of choosing between several players. The Pirates chose Dan McCutchen and Jeff Karstens over Phil Coke and George Kontos.
